List of Bathroom Items You Can Let Go Of TODAY!
Whether you have a spa-like bathroom at home or a more realistic smallish bathroom, having a tidy space is essential. Bathrooms are one of the rooms in the home that need to be cleaned very frequently. When you have a cluttered countertop, it can make cleaning feel like an impossible task.
One of the main reasons, I’m so fond of having decluttered and simplified spaces is because of how easy it makes the space to clean. Imagine having a bathroom counter that is free of junk, you could wipe the space up in no time at all.
The key to having an organized and cluttered bathroom is all about inventory. Your bathroom may have a lot of storage or maybe just one little cabinet (like I have in my house). You have to take inventory of all of the products and items that you store in the bathroom and then have sufficient storage space for all of them. Bathroom products seem to multiply quickly and we never really get to use them all before they go bad. Or we just get tired of them and buy something new without replacing the old.
Bathrooms are one of my favorite spaces to declutter, there is usually very little emotional attachment to bathroom products and you have the luxury of having expiration dates on your side when deciding whether or not something is worth keeping.
Step 1: Pick a Space to Declutter - Linen Closet, Medicine Cabinet, Drawers, Shower/Tub, or Under Sink Storage. - You pick the space to start working. Take the items completely out and wipe the space down.
Step 2: Group Like with Like -Group all of the like items together- Hair Care, Body Lotions, Make-up, Grooming Products, Medicine, etc.… This is truly the only way to see how much inventory you have. It forces you to take a look at things that have long been forgotten at the back of your closet or cabinet. I’m sure at one point you will say out loud, “I FORGOT WE HAD THIS”!
Step 3: Get Ruthless with your Decluttering -Now is the time, to be honest with yourself - Do I like this? Do I use this? Could someone else benefit from this? Do we have too many of these to use?, Why did I buy this?
Step 4: Make your piles - Divide your items, keeping like with like into 3 piles, Keep, Trash, Donate. Start with the obvious trash and get that bagged up and removed. Have a box handy for anything that can be donated. Make sure to dispose of medication properly- your town or pharmacy can provide you with resources on how to dispose of medications in your area.
Step 5: Storage- You should now be left with your KEEP items. This is where you might need some containers or baskets to keep items together. Use small containers in a drawer for nail tools, cotton swabs, hair accessories, contact supplies, etc.… Use larger plastic bins under the sink for hair and body products- I recommend plastic in the bathroom because spills or leaks are inevitable and will be easier to clean. If you have a linen closet, keep towels in easy reach and then use the upper shelves for extra bathroom items. - Challenge yourself to use up your products before buying anything new. Medicine should be grouped by adult and child and in clearly marked bins. First Aid items should also be easy to access, you don’t want to have to mess around finding what you need in a true emergency.
Strive to keep your countertop clear- when everything has a place it will become second nature to put it back where it goes (although it may take a little time to train your brain and those in your home to follow through). Our homes do not have to be pharmacies - it’s ok to not have all of the things in your own bathroom. It’s ok to only have one of something, it’s very easy to go out and get more when you start to run low. If you have a lot of storage space, by all means, stock up! But many of us do not, so keep the extras at the store and go get them when you run out.
